When you spend most of your time swimming, biking and running, you tend to be more conscious of the energy being consumed when you’re just sitting in a car or plane. For the 2010 Keuka Lake Triathlon, race coordinator Score This!!! organized to have the athletes reduce the carbon footprint of the race by offsetting travel in support of Carbonfund.org’s carbon reduction projects around the world.

Officials from Yates County, Jerusalem, and New York State Department of Transportation joined State Sen. George Winner (third from right) and Assemblyman James Bacalles (right) for a ribbon cutting ceremony at Route 54A
Posted Oct 26, 2010 @ 02:39 PM
Several local and state officials gathered along the side of Route 54A at the scenic overlook near Esperanza Drive last week to celebrate the completion of the $5.2 million rehabilitation of the state highway.

For several years, area residents had loudly complained about the condition of the road, and state officials responded with a promise to make repairs in 2011.

But when federal funds left over from another highway project in the Southern Tier came available last year, the project’s timeline was moved up, and work began in March.

State Sen. George Winner said the project shows how important constituent services are. “We responded to your calls,” he told the group of county legislators and Jerusalem officials, adding, “Thank all of you who worked to get it down. You made it a priority.”

“The reconstruction of Route 54A has long been one of our region’s priority infrastructure improvement projects, and I couldn’t be happier to hlep celebrate its completion, said Winner, adding, “Most importantly, it’s a well-earned day for the many local residents and local officials who worked long and hard, over many years to stress the urgency of these improvements. Assemblyman (James) Bacalles and I were pleased that New York recognizd the value of keeping local federal stimulus savings at work within our region. It’s a great benefit to Yates County residents and motorists, and a solid investment that strengthens tourism and the entire local economy.”

Bacalles said, “I am pleased this project has been completed. The governor agreed with Sen. Winner and me that this highway improvement was important and allowed the money to be reallocated from other areas to get it accomplished. This is a great day to cut the ribbon on this project and DOT’s Region 6 staf deserves credit for their efforts in making it a reality.”

It is official.  The DOT has finally paved route 54A.  There will be course records broken next year for sure.

As you are well aware the 2008 racing season is here and it is in full swing. I'd like to recognize the first three completed races in the Council for Responsible Sport, pilot Seedling Race Program: CB&I Triathlon in Woodlands TX, Reno Half Marathon in Reno NV and Keuka Lake Triathlon in upstate NY. All three have made significant green efforts in their events leaving more of an impact on their participants than the venues at which they are held. Congratulations.

We would like to thank all of the athletes who help us in this endeavor. We collected 55 pairs of sneakers and 5 cell phones to recycle.  We also reduced our trash by 66% from last year. We have calculated that the land filled portion of the trash will be 100lbs.
